What a session covers

Short, and at their pace.

  1. Short, and paced to them: breaks when they need one, and we stop while it’s still fun.
  2. A parent or guardian in the room the whole time.
  3. More conversation than direction, so the expression is theirs.
  4. The clean one first, on a neutral backdrop: the one every submission asks for. Then colour or the wall of light, with a change of tops and hair up and down.
  5. Retouching that keeps them looking like themselves. Casting needs the photo to match the kid who walks in.
  6. Chosen together from the screen, before anybody goes home.
  7. Plan on a new one about once a year, or after the growth spurt, the haircut, the braces coming off: they change fast, and casting expects the current face.

Who are kids and teens headshots for?

Young performers: kids sending a first agency submission or updating one, kids auditioning for school and community theatre, young dancers, and teens applying to post-secondary fine arts programs.

What ages do you photograph?

Five and up. Get in touch with their age and what the headshot is for, and I’ll tell you how the session runs for them.

Can I stay in the room?

Yes, the whole time. For younger kids especially, it helps them settle faster.

How long does a session take?

Shorter than an adult session, and paced to them. Some kids are ready in ten minutes and some take the first twenty to warm up. It’s the same session either way, and we stop while it’s still fun.

What should they wear?

A couple of simple tops in solid colours, and whatever they feel most like themselves in. If they have a look they love, bring it.

Will the photos be retouched?

Lightly, and never in a way that changes how they look. Casting needs the photo to match the kid who walks into the room.

How often should we update it?

About once a year, or sooner after a visible change: the growth spurt, the haircut, the braces coming off. Agencies and casting expect the current face.

My kid dances. Is this the right session?
